Physical Education

At Harvey Road Primary School, we value the importance of developing and enhancing the children’s fundamental skills in varied inclusive activities, whilst also providing opportunities in traditional competitive sports. We have invested in apparatus to further extend the skills of the children at the school including a long jump pit, high jump frame and a newly refurbished pool.

Our child-centred approach is instrumental to how we teach PE; to engage, support and challenge every child. We encourage leadership and independence, which allows all abilities to participate at their own level. As a result, children at Harvey Road Primary School from Reception to Year 6, will receive a minimum of two hours of physical activity each week.

Children will focus on skill progression in a wide range of different sports and will then be able to apply these within a competitive environment, not only through intra-school competitions (such as our annual swimming gala, Sports Day and a multi –sports event we call Footnets) but also many inter-school competitions (Dance and Gym festivals, Tri-golf, Rugby festival run by Saracens, Football tournaments, Athletics events).

Children are given the opportunity to further their experiences during the year through residential school journeys, where a wider variety of outdoor activities are on offer, such as surfing, high ropes, agility courses, canoeing/kayaking and abseiling, our trip to Snowdonia which is both physically and mentally challenging and regular educational visits.

During the school year, children are given the opportunity to take advantage of other facilities at our local secondary school and private school. Where they can use obstacle, cross-country and full track courses. In addition, we use our local amenities for Tennis, Sailing, Canoeing and as well as having links with Watford Football Club.

During the second half of the Summer Term all children at Harvey Road Primary School will learn how to swim in the school swimming pool, with two weekly sessions for each class.

On leaving Harvey Road Primary School, a successful learner of this subject will:
