Explorers
The Explorer’s curriculum is based on a respect for children and their capacity to initiate, investigate and maintain curiosity in the world around them. We believe in a child's right to play; the right to access the outdoors (and in particular a woodland environment); the right to experience risk in a controlled way in the natural world along with the right to develop their emotional intelligence through social interaction, building a resilience to enable creative engagement with their peers and their potential.
The Explorers curriculum has been designed into four main areas. These are:
- Shelter building
- Tying knots
- Using tools
Every pupil from Nursery to Year 6 has an ‘Explorer’s ‘passport’. This is a progressive document in which pupils record what they have learnt each half term. For instance, learning how to tie a reef knot when building a shelter. As pupils secure their explorer’s skills they work cooperatively with their peers, correctly using key skills. If more personalised learning needs to take place this is done through scaffolded learning, support during practical work and pre-teaching of new skills and vocabulary.
Our Explorer’s Area encourages children to:
- Develop personal and social skills
- Work through practical problems and challenges
- Use tools to create, build or manage
- Discover how they learn best
- Learn how to manage failures
- Build confidence in decision making and evaluating risk
- Develop practical skills
- Develop their language and communication skills
- Improve physical motor skills
